“Say to those with fearful hearts…” (Isaiah 35:4)

Say to the cowardly: “Be strong; do not fear! Here is your God; vengeance is coming. God’s retribution is coming; He will save you.” Isaiah 35:4 (HCSB)

This verse is translated in the NIV as, “Say to those with fearful hearts…” If you’re like me, you know what it’s like to have a fearful heart.83630774_640

When I think of a fearful heart I think of anxious thoughts and overwhelming worry. It seems like the norm for us to be overly worried or anxious about things. The pressure put on us by parents and society is intense sometimes. Our desire to get ahead, to make a name for ourselves, to be seen as a success can lead to anxiety and worry and depression.

We can be fearful-hearted or cowardly when our focus is on the wrong thing. If our focus is on worldly success or popularity or status, we will have fearful hearts and will probably react in cowardly ways in order to get ahead. Often people do whatever it takes to succeed, no matter who it hurts. There are broken homes, broken hearts, and broken lives all over this country that are a testament to what people will give up in the name of success or a bigger paycheck.

But, if we remember that God will save us, that He should be our primary focus, then we have no reason to be afraid. We have no reason to fear anything because our God is here, He is with us, He is present. He sent Jesus Christ down to this earth so we could have a glimpse into who He is and His character. God is with us, so we have no reason to be afraid.

Put your focus in the right Person. Love others like God loves them. Don’t repay evil for evil. God will take care of the vengeance. Don’t worry about tomorrow because sufficient for today is it’s trouble. So don’t be afraid, but be strong. Trust in Him and believe in Jesus Christ and you will be saved.
