As we begin this new school year, you will be faced with uncertainty, loneliness, and fear. You will need to make new friends, will lose some old friends, maybe fail a class, drop a class, be tempted to go to a party where they know they shouldn’t be, be tempted to go just a little bit further with a boyfriend or girlfriend, or type in something they know they shouldn’t be searching on Google. This is the unfortunate reality of the world we live in. Things were really not that much different in the Bible. They may have acted out certain desires in a different way, but the desire to be popular or cool or get along and go along rather than be a fully devoted follower of Jesus is as old as time.
This year is also very full of potential and opportunity. We want to take advantage of that opportunity and potential. We want to turn uncertainty into trust and lies from the world into truth from the Word.
We’re going to take a look at some examples of people in the Bible who are just like us. They struggle with fear, loneliness, depression, temptation, and untapped potential. People like Elijah, Ruth, Paul, James, and Timothy’s mother, Eunice.
As we study these characters we are going to see how the “Bible heroes” we grew up learning about are really not so different than us. In fact, if we were to make a few key decisions, we would live out our potential and God would be able to work His plan and purpose through our lives.
